Shalom’s Journey

From Nigeria to the UK classroom, with Portsmouth SCITT

Background

Four years ago, Shalom moved from Nigeria to the UK with a dream of becoming a teacher. In her home country, she had worked with children in community and church settings but lacked formal classroom experience.

“I discovered I could be a teacher, though I was hesitant because I didn’t have classroom experience. But I had a passion for working with children, and I needed the qualification to make it a profession.”

When searching for training providers, Shalom came across Portsmouth SCITT online.

“The day of my interview, I’d just come from a hospital appointment. I was reluctant, but I went - and the reception was amazing. It felt like a small cohort where I could talk to people and ask questions. I felt at home. I didn’t apply anywhere else after that.”

Training Year: Growth, Confidence, and Belonging

Shalom describes her training year as transformative:

“I grew my confidence to ask questions and ask for help. I grew up knowing that it's not so easy to ask teachers questions; it felt impossible. But Portsmouth SCITT created a safe space where everything I shared was valued. It wasn’t rubbish; it was valid.”

She highlights the mix of theory and practical application, reflective practice, and strong mentoring:

“I loved the balance of theory and classroom practice. The weekly reflections weren’t just notes, they helped me think deeply about what I did and what I could do better.”

Overcoming Challenges: Pregnancy During Training

Midway through her training, Shalom discovered she was pregnant: a moment of joy mixed with anxiety:

“I was scared I’d have to drop out, but it was the opposite. Portsmouth SCITT gave me all the support I needed. It felt like a community, not just a course. My mentors and tutors worked with me so I could finish successfully.”

Determined not to let pregnancy hold her back, Shalom completed her training and secured a teaching role before finishing the course:

“I told the school at the interview that I was pregnant because I wanted them to make an informed decision. They still chose me and I was so grateful.”

Advice for Future Trainees

Now teaching in a local primary school, Shalom encourages others to take the leap:

“If you have a passion for teaching, go for it. Your experiences and perspective matter, and Portsmouth SCITT will support you every step of the way. You’ll find a welcoming community that helps you succeed.”
