  • Career Changers

I haven't worked with children recently. Will this affect my application?

No. Recent experience is helpful, but it is not required. If you would find it useful, we can arrange taster days either before you apply or before the course begins. These days help you get a sense of classroom life, but they are optional.

What pre-course reading or experience would help me prepare?

Once you receive an offer, we will provide pre-course tasks to help you prepare. These tasks introduce key ideas and give you a head start before the training year begins.

I am changing career. Will there be additional support for developing subject knowledge or behaviour management?

Yes. We can signpost applicants and trainees to further subject knowledge enhancement where needed. Throughout the course your subject knowledge will be reviewed by subject and course leads, and you will receive guidance on how to strengthen any areas that need development. Behaviour management is covered in your centre-based training and supported through mentoring in school.

I've been out of education for a while. Will there be opportunities to refresh academic skills?

Yes. The PGCE element of the course offers support for developing your academic writing. Each portfolio task includes an introduction with recorded guidance and supporting materials. You will receive formative feedback on your drafts before final submission, and you can arrange tutorials if you would like extra help. This support is designed to help you rebuild confidence with academic work at your own pace.
