What safeguarding checks do i need before starting?

As a teacher training provider, we are gatekeepers to the teaching profession and take that responsibility very seriously. All trainees must complete an enhanced DBS check before starting the programme. We also carry out prohibition checks and all other required safeguarding and suitability checks. Every applicant is screened and interviewed by staff who are fully trained in safer recruitment. These checks are non-negotiable and ensure that only suitable individuals enter the profession and work with children.

What professional expectations do trainees need to meet?

Trainees are expected to behave as teaching professionals at all times. This includes meeting Part 2 of the Teachers' Standards, which covers professional conduct, honesty, integrity and appropriate relationships. We also expect trainees to uphold the Nolan Principles of public life, which include values such as selflessness, openness and accountability. These expectations apply in school, during training sessions and in all communication as a representative of Portsmouth SCITT.

What happens if safeguarding concerns aise during the programme?

Any safeguarding concerns are taken seriously. If an issue is raised, it will be referred to the Course Director for investigation. We follow clear procedures to make sure concerns are handled properly and in line with school and national safeguarding guidance. Trainees are supported throughout the process, and we work closely with partner schools to ensure the safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff.
