  • School Centred Initial Teacher Training

in Portsmouth and on the Isle of Wight

  • For parents & carers

I'm a parent/carer. How can I balance training with family life?

Many of our trainees are parents or carers, and we understand that you may be juggling several responsibilities. Good communication is key. We encourage you to talk to us early about any pressures or concerns so that we can help you plan ahead. While the course is full time, we will work with you to make things as manageable as possible and offer guidance where needed. Many trainees find that routines, honest conversations and realistic expectations help them balance both roles well.

I HAVE SPECIFIC CARING OR FAMILY CIRCUMSTANCES (E.G. AS A FATHER, FERTILITY TREATMENT, FOSTER OR KINSHIP CARER). WHAT SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE?

We recognise that family life looks different for every trainee, and some circumstances may require additional sensitivity, privacy or flexibility. Whether you are a father balancing childcare, a foster or kinship carer, or navigating fertility treatment or family change, Portsmouth SCITT will support you with understanding and discretion.

You can speak to us confidentially about your situation at any point. We will work with you - and where appropriate, your placement school - to consider reasonable adjustments, plan ahead for key appointments, and ensure that your training year remains manageable.

No one should feel they have to hide aspects of their caring responsibilities. We are committed to supporting all family structures and ensuring every trainee feels respected, included and set up to thrive.

Can my placement accommodate school drop-off and pick-up?

We cannot guarantee this but we do try to take family responsibilities into account when allocating placements. If you have specific needs around drop-off or pick-up times, please let us know. We will always aim to find a practical solution.

Does the trainee timetable follow School holidays?

Yes. When you are on placement, you follow the school holiday pattern of your placement school. We will confirm the full set of term dates before the course begins so you are aware of any differences across local areas or partner schools. This helps you plan ahead and understand the rhythm of the training year.
