  • Lauren's Journey

Thriving as an Autistic Teacher with Portsmouth SCITT

    Background

Lauren’s motivation to become a primary teacher began while working on a farm with primary-aged children:

“I didn’t do my degree in primary education, but working with children really motivated me. I loved helping them and seeing them learn.”

When researching training providers, Portsmouth SCITT stood out:

“I saw Portsmouth SCITT online and on Instagram, and it just seemed really supportive. At the interview, Emma and Hayley were so kind and reassuring. It could have been scary, but I felt comfortable straight away. That confirmed I’d made the right choice.”

Training Year: Support That Made the Difference

Lauren openly shares that being autistic made aspects of training challenging:

“Because of my autism, it can be hard for me to ask for help or even know I need help. Emma could see that straight away – before I even knew. There was always a solution, no matter how tricky things felt or how much pressure I was under.”

She also found the cohort experience transformative:

“I got along with everybody. I always felt comfortable, even when partnered with different people in schools. That was new for me; I’d never felt that comfortable learning with others before.”

    Overcoming Challenges Through Adaptation

Lauren explains how Portsmouth SCITT worked proactively to make adjustments:

“When things felt overwhelming, the team listened and adapted what I needed. They were flexible and creative in finding solutions so I could succeed. That level of care made all the difference.”

    Advice for Future Trainees

Lauren’s message to others who are neurodivergent or have additional needs:

“Just go for it. Be honest about your challenges and ask for help. That’s how I got the support I needed. Portsmouth SCITT were hands-on with adapting everything. Doing it with SCITT is the best advice I can give.”
